Yorkshire police link fake goods with illegal drug trade
A crackdown by police and customs officials in Yorkshire has revealed that there is a link between people selling fake goods in the area and those involved in the illegal drugs trade.
The local Pendle Today publication reported that officers made a number of arrests in raids on fake goods traders.
During the raids the officers recovered £14,000 of fake DVDs and cigarettes. They also seized cannabis plants worth £2,000.
In total, two people were arrested on charges of selling counterfeit goods and four more were charged with drugs offences.
Sergeant Mark Baines, who coordinated the action, explained to the paper: "It's been a really successful day and members of the public have stopped in the street and thanked us."
Recently, officials in Wales launched a campaign to educate the public about the risks of buying fake goods.
At the time, politician Peter Rees told the Port Talbot Guardian that people selling fake goods threatened legitimate retailers and were often involved in other illegal activities.
"This is a serious national and local problem. Local jobs are under threat if people continue to buy fake goods," he explained.
