Wholesaler uses government system to measure environmental impact
The government is working hard with wholesalers and retailers to try to make sure green goods become the 'norm' in the near future.
Climate change minister Joan Ruddock said that consumers did not always realise the environmental impact of the goods they were buying and added that it was up to businesses to make this data more readily accessible.
She pointed to a wholesaler called Continental Clothing that had worked with the Carbon Trust to trial a new method to measure CO2 emissions.
In a statement, the minister explained that the wholesaler sold blank printable T-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts and was committed to doing so in a sustainable manner.
Working with the Carbon Trust, the wholesaler implemented the PAS2050 pilot, which calculates embedded emissions of CO2 across the life cycle of a product.
As a result of the scheme, the company found that the total carbon footprint of a white men's T-shirt was 6.5 kilograms. However, by opting to use renewable electricity, the wholesaler was able to reduce this figure to just 650 grams.
The government said that this was the first time a small or medium business had used the PAS2050 scheme - demonstrating its scalability.
