Research from DLA Piper has shown that more than £800 million is spent annually on items such as clothing and cosmetics via online shopping portals and auction sites. According to the figures, which were compiled with ComSec International, as much as £5 of every £100 spent on sites like eBay goes towards the payment of counterfeit goods. Simon Levine of DLA Piper suggested that consumers should be wary of buying fake items for their own benefit as well as that of the genuine brands. He said: "Counterfeit goods dilute the value of brands, undermine the integrity of auction sites and cost the UK economy millions of pounds in lost income. "If you invest your trust and money in a brand you want to know you're getting the real thing, whether that's make-up and cosmetics or domestic appliances and children's toys."
