Small businesses urged to reduce energy usage
Small businesses have been urged to consider ways they can reduce their energy use, after research showed many companies were continuing to waste money and electricity.
Figures from the Carbon Trust showed that businesses in the UK are wasting almost £7 million a day on poor energy efficiency.
However, the survey did find that 20 per cent of bosses believe reducing carbon emissions has risen up their agenda in the last six months.
Overall, the Carbon Trust estimated that small businesses in the country could save £1.3 billion during the next 12 months, by simply putting in place cost-effective energy efficiency measures.
Hugh Jones, solutions director at the Carbon Trust, commented: "It's an encouraging sign that wise companies are realising that cutting carbon and being green is the easiest way to make a business lean.
"We're talking about money that could be saved by making quick and easy changes such as encouraging staff to turn off computers and lights, turning down the heating, or maintaining equipment properly."
Recently, the government reported that one UK wholesaler was taking part in a pioneering scheme to access the total carbon footprint of its goods and make this information available to buyers.
