Retailers and residents join forces to protest new supermarkets
Retailers and local residents from a town in south-west England have joined forces to try to prevent Tesco from opening two new stores.
The local Weston & Somerset Mercury reported that over 600 independent retailers and local residents have signed a petition against the two planned Tesco Express shops in the town of Weston-super-mare.
What's more, the local Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Mike Bell, has said that the new shops would be bad news for small local retailers.
He explained to the paper: "These stores will not give any more choice as they are in locations already served by existing convenience stores.
"There are already Tesco Express shops in Castle Batch, Locking Castle and the Oldmixon estate. As well as this, Tesco also own the One Stop in Locking Road and there is also their town centre supermarket.
"I am sure few local residents are against Tesco as such, but when their empire building is about driving out competition and denying us real choice, then it has to be stopped."
Recently, the Forum of Private Business stressed that it was important the government always considered the needs of the smallest businesses when making any decisions.
