Report warns small businesses fear recession
A new report has warned that many small businesses in the UK are concerned the country is heading for a genuine recession.
The latest British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Quarterly Economic Survey revealed that a record number of small businesses believe the economy could enter a recession within the next three months.
In particular, the report indicated that many small businesses are struggling to successfully maintain their cashflows in the face of the credit crunch.
BCC director general David Frost said the figures clearly showed there was serious risk of recession in the coming months.
"This is obviously deeply worrying, not just for business but for the consumer too, with both manufacturing and services reporting negative results," he explained.
"The temptation for the government will be to raise business taxes in the next Pre-Budget Report because the exchequer is running out of money. This would be a catastrophe."
Economic adviser David Kern added that it was vital the Bank of England considered cutting interest rates in a bid to kick start the economy.
"A major recession can still be avoided, but forceful measures are needed to improve confidence. The MPC must resist misguided calls for higher interest rates. Indeed, if wage pressures remain muted, the option of early interest rate cuts must be considered," he concluded.
