Midland village ditches plastic bags to save environment
Villagers from the Midlands are spearheading a campaign to convince local retailers to ditch plastic bags in a bit to help protect the environment.
The Birmingham Mail has reported that local residents from Alrewas have recently stepped up efforts to convinced independent retailers to stop handing out plastic bags to shoppers.
Three local women, Cat Stuart, Jo Lewis and Jane Gravells, first convinced a few local retailers to abandon plastic bags in favour of more sustainable alternatives.
Early retailers to embrace the scheme included the butcher and the local general store.
With some retailers on board, the local Co-op took notice, offering to donate 1,500 re-usable cotton bags for residents to use.
As a result, nearly every small retailer in the village has now opted for re-usable bags, the paper explained.
Ms Stuart explained that it was important small retailers got behind such schemes and helped change consumers' attitudes.
"A lot of it's about changing our habits. Plastic bags weren't really introduced until the 1950s and we managed before that," she said to the paper.
"Hopefully we'll inspire other people in the West Midlands to do their bit too."
