Local organisations try to save Devon post offices
Local authorities and communities have joined forces to try to save ten post offices earmarked for closure in Devon.
The BBC has reported that a partnership including Devon County Council, Torbay Council, the Community Council of Devon, Devon Rural Network, and Devon Renaissance have written to the Post Office asking it to look again at plans to close the ten rural branches.
According to the group, the planned closures would shut 22 per cent of Devon's post offices - more than the company's target of 18 per cent.
In addition, the coalition argued that the closures would make it hard to meet government targets that state 95 per cent of people in rural areas must be within three miles of a post office. They argue that Devon's winding roads make journeys longer.
Brian Greenslade, leader of Devon County Council, explained to the BBC: "This is an issue of fundamental importance to the communities of Devon and we believe they deserve a fair hearing of our case.
"Post offices are a focal point for communities and we must fight hard to reduce the impact of these closures on Devon."
