Large companies are taking advantage of small wholesalers
A new report has suggested that larger companies are taking advantage of small-scale wholesalers and suppliers by not paying on time.
The Federation of Small Business (FSB) said that larger firms were "exploiting" small suppliers by delaying invoice payments and imposing new terms and settlement fees.
According to the pressure group, big businesses regularly delay payments to small wholesalers and suppliers by as much as 100 days. They often also change terms and conditions with little notice.
The FSB explained that there was legislation that allowed small suppliers to charge interest on late payments. However, it added that small companies were often reluctant to do this, as they feared losing valuable contracts completely.
"Big companies appear to be aware that small businesses are afraid of taking them on over payment terms and are abusing their power as a result," the FSB's national chairman, John Wright, commented.
"At a time when small businesses are finding it difficult to deal with a slowing economy and rising costs, it is shocking that large companies think it is acceptable to use them as an unofficial source of credit."
Recently, the This is Money website reported on one successful wholesaler who had decided to focus on a very niche market to compete with larger rivals.
Vanquish Wine's owners explained that they were in a strong position precisely because they offered something larger companies could not.
